Accommodation

Easter Island has 10 hotels and 30 hostels or guesthouses. Private home-stays are a great way to experience the local culture, however care should be taken as standards may vary.

airport

Mataveri International Airport is a few minutes drive from downtown Hanga Roa.

arts & craft

Carved wood and stone crafts can be bought at the Art Market (Mercado Artesanal) in Hanga Roa. Handicrafts can also be bought directly from the themselves.

eating out

Sophisticated food is hard to find, however the fresh local produce is excellent, and freshly caught lobster is abundant in the restaurants. Locally grown fruit includes bananas and pineapple.

festival

Each year, from late January through February, the islanders celebrate Tapati Rapa Nui, a 10-day festival honoring the Polynesian cultural heritage of the island.

money

The local currency is the Chilean Peso. 1 US$ = approximately 520 pesos. US dollars are strongly recommended for ease of exchange. Some hotels and tour operators accept Credit Cards.

 

sports

Crystal clear waters provide tremendous visibility for snorkeling and diving. For certified divers, dive gear and dive trips can be organized at the fishing cove in Hanga Roa. The water temperature averages 21C. The best season for diving is November to April. The best swimming beach is Anakena, located on the northeastern side of the island.

transport

The Island's small surface area makes it ideal for exploring. Various hire options are available, including Jeeps, Vans, Horses and Mountain bikes. Taxis also offer reasonable value.

weather

The island enjoys a mild subtropical climate year round. The average annual high is 20 C. The coolest months are July and August, which average 17 C. Rainfall occurs throughout the year, with May and June being the rainiest months.
